An Exhibition by the abstract artist Toni Harrower best described in her own words....
"A showcase of paintings with corresponding poetry displayed beside one another. The paintings are a direct response to the poems and show how we can communicate in different forms. I select significant words from the poems and use these to generate the titles of the paintings. These titles then relate to my own colour coded alphabet and provide a colour palate to start painting. From this point, each piece follows a basic set of rules - working from left to right, top to bottom. This forces me to use colours I would not usually choose or pair together.
Working in a repetitious manner, I create individual patterns and repeating geometric shapes which form a grid-like structure. The grids provide a level of control over the paint which is otherwise unrestricted.
The build-up of layers expresses the passing of time. As the paint gains depth and weight, gravity and a lack of control come into play, causing the paint to fall away, with cells merging into one another. The paintings highlight the many ways a piece of writing or artwork can be interpreted."
