Conductor: Catherine Larsen-Maguire
This spring in Glasgow NYOS Senior Orchestra, conducted by Catherine Larsen-Maguire present a programme full of natural wonder sure to delight audiences of all ages. First, we preform Einojuhani Rautavaara’s best-known work Cantus Arcticus, complete with recorded bird song captured, by the composer near the Arctic Circle. The Orchestra then perform one movement from Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling orchestral suite Scheherazade.
For the final piece of the evening the Symphony Orchestra perform Elgar’s playful yet mysterious composition Enigma Variations, in which the composer sketches short musical portraits of his friends and family as variations on a theme. A quaint idea by Elgar to amuse himself and those behind the scenes without affecting the music or the enjoyment of the listener.
