_Oklahoma! _is one of the world’s most popular musicals. It was the first of a new genre, the first modern musical play, with one of the greatest and best-loved musical scores of all time.
Set in Indian Territory at the turn of the 20th century, just before Oklahoma became a State and joined the Union, the show’s storyline has not just one, but two love triangles.
Laurey Williams, who, along with her Aunt Eller, runs a farm near the small town of Claremore, has two admirers – Curly McLain, a local cowboy, brim-full of charm, and Jud Fry, the sinister farmhand in her employ. When they both propose to take her to the annual Box Social, Laurey is undecided. In a fit of pique and to make Curly jealous, Laurey eventually accepts Jud’s invitation, a decision she quickly regrets.
Meanwhile, Laurey’s friend, Ado Annie, is also torn between two admirers – Will Parker, who has just won the steer-roping competition in Kansas City, and the roving peddler, Ali Hakim. Ado Annie’s ‘pa’, Andrew Carnes, has insisted that Will must have $50 before he can marry his daughter. However, although he won $50 at the fair, Will has spent it all on presents, so still doesn’t have that all-important $50 cash!
Laurey’s dream, portrayed as a ballet, helps her to make up her mind about her love for Curly, Will eventually recovers the $50 he needs to ask for Ado Annie’s hand and the show finally reaches its happy ending as the farmers, cowboys and their families join in a celebration of the new-born State of Oklahoma.
From the enchanting opening of _Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’_ through the many wonderful songs, such as _I Cain’t Say No, People Will Say We’re In Love, The Farmer and the Cowman_, to the rousing title song itself, _Oklahoma!_ is a theatrical treat for the entire family.
