Anna Clyne: «rewind«
Ravel: Piano Concerto in G major
Yeol Eum Son, piano
Joana Carneiro, conductor
From the crack of the whip that kicks things off, Ravel’s Piano Concerto romps through the worlds of jazz, Basque folk-song and French impressionism, and somehow manages to be utterly serious, teasingly playful and elegantly cool all at the same time. That could said, too, of Igor Stravinsky whose astonishing 1911 ballet Petrushka tells the story of a lovestruck puppet through a brilliant use of orchestral colour and infectious rhythm. Joana Carneiro conducts, and opens with Anna Clyne’s «rewind« which mimics ‘a video tape rapidly scrolling backwards with fleeting moments of skipping, freezing and warping’ to astonishing effect.
