La Bohème, is Puccini’s passionate story of love at first sight set in 19th century Paris.
Set in the Bohemian district, home to students and upcoming artists, La Bohème is a love story between Mimi and Rodolfo. Poet Rodolfo and his friends live their lives in freedom and independence, but pay the price for this through financial hardship. Life takes a turn for the better when Rodolpho falls in love with his fragile neighbour Mimi, but poverty and Mimi's ill health confront the couple with a harsh reality. They soon realise that love cannot conquer all.
In La Bohème, Puccini not only tells a tragic story, but also portrays the subculture of Bohemians in 19th century Paris and their great desire for freedom and independence at any cost. At the time of its premiere in 1896, this opera presented a new outlook on life through everyday subject matter.
