RAB NOAKES & JILL JACKSON
'Finally...Let the show Begin' – The Tour

Rab Noakes is a force to be reckoned within the world of music in Scotland and beyond. Joining forces with life long friend and acclaimed Americana singer songwriter Jill Jackson, together travelling across the UK, creating an undeniable evening of enchanting, stripped back and captivating music, their performances are consistently brilliant, equal parts emotive and entertaining.
Although a generation apart they have worked and sung together for over 20 year and you can expect a rich collection of songs, self-penned alongside innovative interpretations. Each of them is an enthusiastic collaborator as well as an accomplished soloist. The combination of their voices, their wit and their obvious and infectious love of singing they make a sparkling combination with a great sound. They demonstrate the value of how different experiences can make a whole that’s more than the sum of the parts.
Rab is no stranger to String Jam Club having been a welcome guest many times over our 21 years. Early in 2015 Rab was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer. The treatment that followed was, to say the least, rigorous, but with his typical resilience, defiance and wit, he carried on writing and new songs began to emerge based on the experience of the treatment, (which were later to appear on ‘The Treatment Tapes’.) This process formed a significant role in his recovery and at the earliest opportunity he was out on the road again, playing guitar and singing, touring solo in 2016 with the acclaimed double-CD ‘I’m walkin’ here’. Collaborations with the ‘Grit’ Orchestra including performances at WOMAD & Edinburgh International Festivals, plus with long-time friend and colleague Barbara Dickson made 2016 a very busy and fulfilling year for Rab.
In May of 2017 Rab turned 70 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of his first properly-billed, paid gig. Rab has always been considered one of our finest songwriters, but given his recent adversity, recovery, and unstoppable creativity, he has shown himself to be one of the most evergreen, dedicated and respected figures on the Scottish music scene, always coming up with new ideas, and always delivering something fresh, intense and special.
The landmark events of his 70th year continue with release of Rab’s latest album ‘Welcome to Anniversaryville’ and a new tour with the highly-acclaimed Jill Jackson, called 'Finally...Let the show Begin'.
We are very excited to be welcoming Jill to String Jam Club for the first time. Her new album ‘Are We There Yet?’ was released in May 2018 & is the long-awaited 5th solo album by the Paisley born singer songwriter. It’s a record that bears the hallmarks of a 25 year musical
journey that has taken her from Paisley to Top of The Pops, to playing in every State of America (50 States in 50 Days.....yes really!) Jill temporarily relocated to Nashville where she became immersed in Music City’s culture of storytelling songwriting. Personal struggles and a bucket list hike of the Grand Canyon saw the Celtic Connections award-winning artist return, overflowing with lyrical and musical inspiration. These momentous changes of life and reflective nature flow through every word and note of the ten new songs on this extraordinary album – an uplifting, accomplished, mature record. Produced by none other than Boo Hewerdine, the album combines innovative, playful arrangements that would not sound out of place in Lindy Hop, Harlem or the heart of the deep South - songs with an unabashed embrace of gleeful, melodic choruses, all delivered in Jill’s unmistakeable warm and heart-wrenching voice.
Jill first met Rab in the mid-’90s when Rab produced The Brand New Opry for BBC Radio Scotland. Jill, then a teenager, appeared as a guest on the show and they have been friends and colleagues ever since. Rab says “I love singing and I love singing with other people. Jill is one of the best for me as she also loves to sing. We communicate across our generations to make something that’s unique to us”.
