Award-winning dance company and Sadler’s Wells partner prepares for national tour
Multi-award-winning dance theatre company balletLORENT is preparing for its 2018 national tour presenting an original adaptation of the classic fairytale Rumpelstiltskin.
Following the critically acclaimed Rapunzel (2012-2015), and then Snow White (2015-2016), balletLORENT will present the final part of its trilogy of Brothers Grimm fairytales in theatres across the UK from 24 March.
Choreographed and directed by balletLORENT’s Artistic Director Liv Lorent (MBE), Rumpelstiltskin reunites the team of world renowned collaborators who created Rapunzel and Snow White: Poet Laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy (Whitbread, T.S. Eliot and Pinter Prize winner); five-time BAFTA nominated composer Murray Gold (Doctor Who); narrator Ben Crompton (Game of Thrones); BAFTA and Emmy award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton (Game of Thrones and The Crown); set designer Phil Eddolls (joint TMA award winner for Improbable’s The Hanging Man); and OBIE and Outer Critics Circle award-winning lighting designer Malcolm Rippeth.
balletLORENT premiered Rumpelstiltskin at Northern Stage, Newcastle, in October 2017, to great success where it was enjoyed by appreciative audiences of all ages.
On February 1, balletLORENT was announced as one of just three Sadler’s Wells national partners. This important collaboration and recognition, along with the excitement of the national tour and 25th anniversary is set to make 2018 a very memorable year for the Newcastle-based company.
Liv Lorent, Director and Choreographer balletLORENT, said: “We’re looking forward to touring again and returning to theatres where we have built up a special connection with audiences as well as some new venues, which we’re very excited to be working with. As with previous fairytales in our trilogy, Rumpelstiltskin explores big themes that we can all relate to whatever our age. It is the story of the outsider, shunned for being different, and the secret power and knowledge he possesses. He is the original super mutant, a fairytale X-Man in a story of love, obsession, childhood, grief and reconciliation that is made as much for children as it is for adults.”
Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, the show’s scenario writer, said: “It’s a joy and a thrill to be collaborating once again with Liv Lorent and her creative team and to be bringing to life another seminal fairytale to family audiences who love dance or who have yet to discover it.”
With clever characterisation, Rumpelstiltskin celebrates the underdog in a tale of a man’s desperate longing for love and belonging. Set in a rural world of a shepherd and his daughter, Rumpelstiltskin is performed by eight of balletLORENT’s core dancers (age 22 to 53) and two apprentice dancers from the London Contemporary Dance School Postgraduate Apprenticeship Scheme.
The professional ensemble will be joined by an intergenerational community cast of eight local children, aged four to nine-years-old, selected from creative workshops at schools in each tour venue. Four older people aged 65+ will also be selected to take part from creative workshops at local community groups in each location.
