So what does death smell like? Join A Library of Olfactive Materials for an evening's exploration of Scent and Death.
The smell of death itself is a complex, ever shifting combination of more than 400 volatile organic compounds. As decay progresses, levels of individual compounds wax and wane.
We'll be introducing some of these compounds, some surprisingly pleasant, some not so pleasant, and exploring what they can teach us about ourselves and the world around us. We will also explore scents associated with funeral practices - resinous incense and heady florals - and look to examples of artists and perfumers tackling the subject in creative ways.
This event is not suitable for those under 18
Please bear in mind that scents will form a large part of this event. Whilst directly smelling the more unpleasant compounds is optional, we cannot guarantee you won't catch a whiff of them.
