Sex, power and fantasy
The Beggar's Benison Club was an all male social group founded in 1732 in Anstruther, Fife. The club believed in ‘sex for pleasure’ and although they were active for more than a century, not much is known about them.
In the 19th century a range of objects relating to the club were donated to the collections of the University of St Andrews, where they were hidden away from view. Last year, for the first time, the collection was finally shown together at the Wardlaw Museum. This talk we will look at the collection and through this, explore the club’s activities and its beliefs in sex and place these in a wider historical context.
This lecture is part of a series that offers an insight into everything that was traditionally kept behind closed doors. The Sextorical Lectures run on the last Friday of the month at Gladstone's Land and feature experts and academics talking about the history of sex, intimacy and other related topics.
