Sincerely, Valentines – From Postcards to Greetings Cards tells the story of Scotland’s most pioneering and successful commercial photographers, best known for popularising the holiday postcard on a global scale.
The exhibition, co-curated by Catriona Duffy and Lucy McEachan of curatorial company Panel, subjectively mines and reveals a broad range of material, selected from the University of St Andrews Archives and Collections, and looks out beyond the archive, bringing to light new perspectives on Valentines' history. Central to the exhibition is new work from graphic designer Maeve Redmond, who has created a series of oversized postcards, and a new film by Rob Kennedy focusing on the personal stories and experiences of those who worked for Valentines. Both new commissions highlight the innovations in print and graphic design, and the important contribution Valentines made to Dundee’s social, cultural, and industrial heritage.
Join us to consider the powerful social value of archives and collections in a conversation chaired by Catriona McAra, Assistant Director of Collections and Curation at the University of St Andrews, and hear from graphic designer Maeve Redmond and artist Rob Kennedy, alongside curatorial company Panel.
Sincerely, Valentines – From Postcards to Greetings Cards is free and on now until Sunday, 8 January 2023. Did you or your family work at Valentines? We are gathering memories about life at the factory, and its significance to Dundee. We would love to hear from you! Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Graphic designer, Maeve Redmond, has also designed a range of postcards and greetings cards inspired by the exhibition. Explore the range in our online shop.
