This writing, recording and touring project sees Bristol’s acoustic music pioneers Spiro working with contemporary classical group, (Steve Reich's) Synergy Vocals.
The new work will be composed for the eight-piece ensemble by Spiro's main composer Jane Harbour with an international release on Real World Records. Jane will be building on her work to date with instrumental and vocal minimalist forms to create a unique new type of systems music for vocals and new way of using lyrics and song. Jane’s vision for the project catapults the group's trademark raw intricate interplay onto a whole new level, merging the two groups to create one highly emotionally-charged but exquisitely controlled machine. Running with the superhumanity of Synergy's voices, the composition will re-tell and subvert the tales behind English folk song, conjuring filmic images and exploring our timeless struggle with our human condition through issues such as loss and female power.
For tonight’s performance, the four Spiro members – Jane Harbour, violin, Alex Vann, mandolin, Jason Sparkes, accordion, and Jon Hunt, guitar – are joined by the seven voices of world-famous Synergy Vocals, regular collaborators with composer Steve Reich and the contemporary classical avant-garde, for the debut of a suite of tunes composed by Jane Harbour and the band.
