Working with pupils right through Primary school and into Secondary stage we're excited to offer workshops based around the themes of Aerospace, Green Energy, Environmental Science and Sustainable Design. See below for further information on each workshop.
Our school education workshops support the delivery of The Curriculum For Excellence, and many of our activities are based outdoors on our 2000 acre estate, making use of our natural spaces to inspire learning. The King's Foundation works in harmony with the natural world, and as such our workshops also touch upon the UN Sustainable Development goals and support learning for sustainability.
Early Primary Workshops
Aerospace: Skygazers and Shoot to the Moon: Dicover forces, create rockets, look at the wonders of the universe!
Green Energy: Elemental Energy & Simple Circuits: How does one form of energy change to another? How do electrical circuits work?
Environmental Science: Nature Detectives & Weather Watchers: Discover the abundance of Minibeasts on the Estate and take a look at how our weather affects us.
Late Primary Workshops
Aerospace: Small Satellites in Space: Explore forces in flight and space. What is space junk? How do we solve it?
Sustainable Design: Building Bridges: Research strength and shape in nature before building a bridge to save a village!
Green Energy: Creative Circuits and Fire Lighting & Fighting: Create a circuit to light up a greetings card. Learn how to create and control energy"
Environmental Science:Carbon Catchers & Engin-air. Look at the impact of air pollution. Explore the carbon cycle and experiment to banish greenhouse gases.
Secondary Workshops
Aerospace: Inspect and Repair: Undergo training to complete a full repair of your vehicle; learn about roles in aerospace maintenance.
Sustainable Design: Building Bridges: Research strength and shape in nature before building a bridge to save a village!
Environmental Science: Mapping and Monitoring: Practice field recording skills to monitor the biodiversity on Dumfries House Estate. Can you read a map to help you find your way?
British Science Week: Workshops designed to suit any age and stage from Primary through to Secondary. Scottish Power are taking over for British Science week with workshops developed by their Graduates with support from Glasgow Science Centre and the Dumfries House STEM team. There is no charge for the British Science Week workshops - book now! Only three dates available!
TIMINGS
Workshops run from 10am until 2pm each day for Primary schools and from 10am until 3pm for Secondary schools.
NUMBERS
Our workshops can accommodate a maximum of 30 pupils for primary and 20 pupils for secondary. For smaller groups, there is a 15 (12 for secondary) pupil minimum charge.
COSTS
There is no charge for this workshop at point of booking, however Primary Schools can expect to receive an invoice from our finance team soon after your booking is confirmed. You will be charged 5.50 per head based on numbers provided at the time of booking, and this must be paid prior to the workshop taking place. If you bring additional pupils on the day, you will receive a further invoice to cover any additional material costs. We cannot offer refunds to schools bringing fewer pupils than stated at point of booking. There is no charge for Secondary Schools.

TRANSPORT
We have two estate minibuses that can be booked at very competetive prices by emailing dh.education@kings-foundation.org. These minibuses are charged per mileage and seat a maximum of 15 passengers including your staff. New for 2025 - we offer free transfers to/from Cumnock Bus Stance. Bring your pupils to Cumnock by public transport, and we'll do the rest! Both of these options aresubject to availability of our minibuses. Please contact us to enquire.
Please note that many of our workshops take place outdoors and as such pupils and staff should attend ready for the weather.
