David Higham Musical Director
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s soaring masterpiece is one of the most acclaimed musicals of our time. Inspired by Seurat’s painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, it is set in the days running up to the completion of the painting, with George the painter struggling to find his artistic voice whilst at the same time maintaining a relationship with his model and lover Dot. A century later, George’s artist descendant, also called George, finds himself burnt out and in search of an artistic path to follow - and finds the answer to his future not so much in the present but in the past.
Merging past and present into poignant truths about love, passion and the creation of art, this tour de force of musical theatre with its heart breaking music, poetic lyrics and jaunty wit has won numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
