With Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill.
Duncan Chisholm has spent most of his life developing his unique musical voice, often heard with Wolfstone and accompanying Julie Fowlis, and most clearly on a series of sublime solo albums. His feather-light handling of dynamics and ornamentation, allied with his pure-distilled tone, produce a hugely distinctive magic in his music.
At the heart of this show will be compositions from his new album, Sandwood - inspired by the bay of the same name, situated within the far reaches of the north-west coast of Sutherland, which lays claim to hold the finest yet least accessible beach in Scotland.
Duncan’s assembly of musical masterminds, now well known as The Gathering, bring cinematic sound and colour to this new music and include Jarlath Henderson (uilleann pipes/whistles), Patsy Reid (fiddle/viola), Su-a Lee (cello) and Innes Watson (guitars). These musicians individually represent some of the finest talents on the traditional and classical music scene and collectively, with Duncan, present the new sound of traditional Scotland.
Martin Hayes is rightly regarded as one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge from Irish traditional music in recent decades. His unique sound, his mastery of his chosen instrument, his acknowledgement of the past and his shaping of the future of the music, combine to create an astonishing and formidable artistic intelligence. His duo performances with Irish-American guitarist Dennis Cahill are utterly spellbinding, combining intensity and virtuosity with an almost telepathic understanding.
