Scotland is globally renowned for its stunning archaeology, however, new discoveries about the past are continually being made. This is often because much of the past has been buried as a result of subsequent changes in the environment and through different use of the land. Geophysical surveys allow us to look into the past to see what lies beneath the surface. In this talk Prof Bates will present recent discoveries using geophysical methods at World Heritage Sites internationally. He will then show how the techniques are being applied to sites closer to home in Orkney and in the Outer Isles at Calanais.
Prof Bates is a Geoscientist at the University of St Andrews. His research crosses industry to academia with studies that span the globe from climate investigations in the Arctic to archaeological projects tracing our ancestors and the origins of human life in Africa. He regularly works with the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery Channel.
