ABERDEEN EVENING EXPRESS SAYS:
Montmartre Restaurant: Justice Mill Lane, Aberdeen
By Erica Banks, 2 May 2014
ONE OF the best meals I have ever had was a hot oil fondue with fillet steak in an Alpine restaurant in Switzerland.
For years I’ve been trying to re-create that meal, but haven’t found anywhere that serves it.
Enter my new favourite restaurant – Montmartre Restaurant Francais in Aberdeen’s Justice Mill Lane.
The French eatery is a charming little corner of France, complete with rustic wooden beams and alcoves for couples’ dining.
A warm welcome and basket of crusty bread eased us in while we perused the menu – classically French with a contemporary twist.
The daily special of scallops with pea puree, langoustine and pancetta crisp was presented beautifully. The succulent scallops went perfectly with the smoky flavour and crunchy texture of the pancetta and the dish was finished with a whole langoustine.
The long-awaited main course appeared, with sizzling golden oil bubbling away in a pot over a gas flame. Rough-cut, beautifully marbled fillet steak was brought to us along with a peppery rocket salad and homemade dipping sauces: olive tapenade, garlic mayonnaise and chutneys.
But the tender meat didn’t need any additions, although they were welcome. We took our time frying each piece exactly to order and once cooked, it sliced perfectly with just the touch of a knife.
Even from our exclusive little alcove, it was easy to see that other diners were also enjoying themselves. As customers began to leave, we felt welcome to stay as long as we liked and make the most of the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Top food and a class act in the service department put Montmartre at the top of my list of places to visit again.
