WFM Brown's bakery was opened in 1870 by William Frederick Mackinson Brown supplying bread and biscuits to the local shops on the island of Westray in Orkney. Down through the years members of the family have managed to successfully run the business and now with the 4th generation the bakery sells to shops all over Orkney. Watch out in Shetland and Caithness because you'll find our biscuits there too. Many of the original products are still being sold which were popular 75 and 100 years ago. Traditional Abernethy biscuits which contain caraway seeds and our traditional shortbread are still going strong. Some adaptions to the original recipes such as toffee pieces added to the shortbread and Water biscuits made adapting the traditional Cabin biscuit recipe are popular too. Visitors to Westray love to go home with suitcases packed with Shortbread, Flakey biscuits and other goodies to present to family and friends as gifts and reminders of Orkney fare.
