The Corryvreckan Whirlpool is situated off the west coast of Scotland between the islands of Jura and Scarba.
It is one of the largest permanent whirlpools on earth and one of the most dangerous stretches of water around the British Isles. It is said that at certain times the roar is so loud that it can be heard ten miles away. At full strength the currents can reach over 10 knots and produce waves over 9 m high. Visitors will find a number of tour operators in the area offering boat trips to the whirlpool and its surrounding waters, known as the Gulf of Corryvreckan.
