Cruachan the Hollow Mountain Power Station is hidden deep within the mountain of Ben Cruachan on the shores of Loch Awe.

Public tours of and visits to Cruachan Power Station and Visitor Centre are currently suspended. The suspension is to reduce the risk to business-critical areas of our operation. We are planning to re-open the Visitor Centre and resume tours in 2021, but we cannot guarantee this at the present time. Please check our website for the latest information and virtual tour.

Cruachan visitor centre offers guided tours inside the hollow mountain providing an experience like no other. Discover the wonders of an underground world on a spectacular scale.

Just a short distance from Oban, visitors can discover one of the hidden wonders of the highlands; power station buried one kilometre below the ground.

A short journey will transport you into the mountain and at its centre lies a massive cavern which is high enough to house the Tower of London. Within the cavern, enormous turbines convert the power of water into electricity.

The experience continues above the surface in a visitor centre with many things to see and do, including interactive touch screens, allowing visitors the chance to find out how the power station operates and demonstrates the way in which power will be generated well into the future.

Directions

Getting there by railway:- From Falls of Cruachan, descend steps cross road and turn right.

Getting there by aeroplane:- From Glasgow Airport M8 to Erskine Bridge then A82 to Tarbet, follow A83 to Inveraray then A819 towards Oban joining A85 Cruachan 5 miles from junction of A819 and A85.

Getting there by ferry:- From ferry terminal at Oban, A85, 18 miles east.

Cruachan is an official bus stop on passing bus routes.

The centre which houses our free exhibition, café and gift shop is open Monday to Friday 9.15am – 3.15pm. We are not operating guided tours into the power station, we hope to resume these in February 2022. April - October Mon - Fri only 9.15am - 4.45pm Feb, Mar, Nov, Dec Mon-Fri only 9.15am - 3.45pm. Closed January Booking Strongly advised for Guided tour. Please call 01866 962630 for tour times.
