Built in 1753, the large flat area was the stage for Edinburgh's military. After being refurbished to its present day appearance, the esplanade is used today as the annual outdoor showground for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It has also been used to showcase visiting celebrity acts such as TEXAS, Moby, Elton John, Tom Jones and many more.
Whilst walking around, you can can take in the stunning views of the city that surround the castle. You can also see the grave of Esign Ewart and statues to commemorate the Ferdinand Duke of York and Earl Haig. There is also a memorial called the Witches Wall which remembers the large population of women that were burned at the stake for being suspected as witches in the 16th century.
