My name is Julie Hill and I have been a tenant farmer of Carcant estate since November 2005. The estate is a traditionally run sheep farm and because of the steep & rugged terrain we use good working dogs to assist with everyday farm work. Without these dogs it would be impossible to manage sheep.
I have been shepherding for nearly 40 years starting in East Anglia where my passion for the working border collie started me on the path to understanding the language of the dog. My dogs and I have competed at the highest level, winning many national and international championships. Becoming the first and only women up to date to win the Supreme International Championship in both singles and brace competition. My dogs have been my teaches which inspired me to move away from contemporary training and use my own method "The Natural Way" which allows the dog to use his initiative, builds the bond and relationship by learning to speak the dogs own language as to communicate effectively. I have written books and produced DVDs on the subject, along with online teaching and demonstrations in order to promote the method, to help build mutual respect between handler and dog.
My move to Scotland took me and my sheepdogs to some of the remotest, most rugged hill terrain in the UK where, as the sole shepherd, I single-handedly tended 1000 sheep grazing over 8000 acres.
Im in the process of writing a book about my experiences as a hill shepherd and the many challenges my dogs and I face on a day to day basis.
