Welcome to Kilmartin Museum, your starting point to discover the fascinating prehistoric landscape of Kilmartin Glen.

Kilmartin Glen, in the heart of Mid Argyll, is one of Scotland's richest prehistoric landscapes. Over 800 historic monuments, cairns, standing stones, stone circles and rock art dating back over 5000 years have been recorded within this area.

Kilmartin Museum was founded in 1997 by Rachel Butter and David Clough. Since then, we have been interpreting, explaining and conserving the archaeological and natural heritage of Kilmartin Glen.

Situated at the heart of this internationally important landscape on the west coast of Scotland, Kilmartin Museum cares for ancient artefacts from across Argyll. In 2019, just over half of the 22,000 artefacts in our care were awarded Nationally Significant status by Museums Galleries Scotland and an independent panel of experts.

The newly renovated Museum will give visitors the opportunity to see our fascinating ancient artefacts properly conserved and displayed, close to the sites where they were discovered.

The museum also hosts free, fun and friendly guided walks around Kilmartin Glen. On these volunteer-led walks you will visit many of the amazing ancient sites in Kilmartin Glen, including the Linear Cairn Cemetery, Nether Largie South Chambered Cairn and Temple Wood Stone Circle. They are a fun and friendly way to discover what makes this landscape so special!

High Season: 1st March to 31st October, 7 days per week, 10am to 5pm. Low Season: 1st November to 23rd December, 4 days per week (Thursday to Sunday), 11am to 4pm. Closed Season 24th December to end Feb.
