Mangurstadh Gallery in Uig, Isle of Lewis is a family run business. The gallery exhibits pastel and oil paintings by Derek Scanlan together with photography and handmade paper crafts made from plants grown on the artists' croft by Elsie Mitchell. Both artists take inspiration from the crofting township and beautiful coastal landscape which surround the studio gallery. Derek Scanlan (a graduate of Falmouth School of Art) creates expressive pastel drawings and oil paintings which capture the light and changing weather systems which sweep across the land from the ocean. Elsie Mitchell (a graduate of Glasgow School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art) explores the biodiversity of flora and fauna and the agricultural practices, both ancient and contemporary that have shaped and formed the Outer Hebrides. Lorna Scanlan, the artists' daughter can be commissioned to create unique digital portraits. Campbell Scanlan, the artists' son, is a Glasgow based cabinet maker specialising in kitchens and furniture. He offers a bespoke design, manufacturing and installation service. Small items of his work can be viewed in the gallery. Although the gallery will be closed during 2020, the artists and designers work can be viewed online at www.mangurstadhgallery.com and www.campbellscanlan.co.uk. Visitors are welcome to purchase or commission work by phone and/or email.
