A suggested route from central Edinburgh to Rosewell to join the Midlothian Country Circular.
Set between the Moorfoot and Pentland Hills, the countryside south of Edinburgh is attractive. This route is surprisingly rural, there are only a few short sections on main roads.
It is suggested you start near the village of Rosewell, but instructions are also given for cycling from central Edinburgh, using quiet streets where possible to reach Rosewell.
After this the route passes Penicuik on quiet roads or cycle paths to West Linton where there are two pubs and a tea room. After lunch we turn east, passing Gladhouse Reservoir, before turning north to return to your starting point via Temple.
Start at Edinburgh Bicycle in Whitehouse Loan (by Bruntsfield Links). Go south along Whitehouse Loan (bike shop on left) to traffic lights. Straight over, then second left into Blackford Road. Cross Kilgraston Road to Dick Place, right into Lauder Road at cross roads, this becomes South Lauder Road.
At a T junction turn left to Relugas Road. At the end of Relugas Road right into busy Mayfield Road. Take the second left after shops and a bus stop into West Saville Road then first right into Granby Road. Go straight along Granby Road (3 cross roads) and at the T junction turn left into Esslemont Road. At the bend turn right by iron railings into Gordon Terrace. Go along Gordon Terrace then right into busy Liberton Road. At the traffic lights bear left up Kirk Brae. Kirk Brae becomes Lasswade Road, follow Lasswade road for 4 miles to Lasswade.
In Lasswade turn right after crossing the river into Polton Road, signed High School. Keep straight on for two miles to open country. After a timbered house on the left, turn right, signed Auchendinny and Penicuik. Shortly after this you will see the cyclepath to Penicuik on your right and Rosewell village on the left.
