The Royal Deeside Railway is unique in having served all British monarchs from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II, their Royal families and foreign visitors including the Tsar of Russia. The railway was used for Royal trains to and from Balmoral Castle, via Ballater Station. Our collection of rolling stock on site includes the Battery Electric Railcar built specifically for the line in 1958. A number of Victorian railway carriages are also in the process of restoration.
The railway is run entirely by volunteers who undertake special programmes of training to ensure that they reach professional standards of competence. The railway is also available for group visits, for weddings and special functions optionally in conjunction with the Milton Restaurant which is adjacent to the station.
