The Royal Musselburgh Golf club was founded in 1774, we originally played over the famous 9 hole links course situated at Leavenhall Musselburgh, which is regarded as the oldest golf course in the world. The course was designed by one of the finest golf course architects, five times Open Champion James Braid. It remains today largely as he designed it.
Royal Musselburgh is the home of a silver cup, known as the “Old Club Cup” dating back to 1774. This is the oldest cup in the world still played for competitively today.
In 1829 The then officer was instructed to pay more attention to the forming of the golf hole. An instrument for the purpose of creating the hole was purchased. This gave birth to the world’s first hole cutter. The Royal Musselburgh is still in possession of the original Hole Cutter as part of our relics collection.
