Visitors to Skyeskyns Waternish Tannery are transported back in time to witness how real sheepskins are made using time honoured methods of leather making - one of the oldest crafts known to man.

Skyeskyns, manufacturers and suppliers of finest quality sheepskins, sheepskin products and much more, is a family business established 1983 in Waternish, Skye. One of only two remaining sheepskin tanneries in the UK, it was awarded VisitScotland’s 5* Visitor Attraction grading for its “exceptional customer service” and world-class visitor experience in 2024/25.

All year round, visitors are offered free guided tours to witness time-honoured methods of making leather, the oldest craft, and then the chance to browse perhaps the most comprehensive range of luxurious natural sheepskins and sheepskin products to be found anywhere.

Our tannery tours take place at regular intervals throughout the day. For individuals or family groups, tours are free and there is no need to book.

On arrival, you can also watch our wee tanning process video and listen to an audio tour of the tannery. Our audio tannery tours are available in five languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Listen using your phone and our QR code on site or use one of the media players available.

After the tannery, explore our beautiful original showroom and shop for high quality sheepskins, accessories and clothing.

Take a break with gorgeous coffee, bakes and soup in our unique pop-up seasonal café, the Yurtea & Coffee, open seven days a week until September. During the winter, why not grab a coffee from our coffee corner in the Showroom.

Our Waternish showroom and Tannery is open between 9.30am and 5.30pm seven days a week. Our Portree showroom is open between 10am and 4.30pm seven days a week. Tearoom yurt on a seasonal basis only Easter-October - currently (Summer 2025) open 7 days a week between 9.30am and 5.00pm. Note: Opening times are a guide only and may change on a daily basis.
