Swanston New Golf Club
Swanston Farm is home to one 18-hole golf course, a 9-hole short-course, a driving range, practice facilities, a FootGolf course and a DiscGolf course. All boast a tranquil and beautiful setting and views of the Pentland Hills or the South side of Edinburgh.
By 2005 the course was in need of major investment to bring it up to a higher standard and ensure its prosperity for another 80 years. In 2006 work began on seven new holes which opened for play in March 2009; six of them on the neighbouring lower ground (previously agricultural fields) not available to Miss Carswell during the 1920’s. Some improvements have been made to the 11 original holes without losing their character and yet more improvements are planned for the future. In May 2009 the new holes were officially opened by Gavin Hastings OBE, David McLetchie (MSP Edinburgh, Pentlands), Douglas Connon (SGU Chairman), Ethel Jack (SLGA President) and Lynne Kenny (Ladies European Tour Player).
Templar Course
When planning the improvements to the 18-hole layout, a decision was made to secure the long-term future of golf at Swanston by providing facilities that would encourage new golfers of all ages to both try golf and encourage their progress through to being full members in the future.
To achieve this goal it was felt that one 18-hole course was not enough. A separate course is essential to enable learners of the game to play without feeling the pressure of the more experienced golfer pushing from behind.
On the 4th Wednesday of each month, April to October, the Templar Course is played as a 6-hole ‘competition’ layout where 3 pairs of the par-3’s are joined together to make 3 par-4’s. This is then played three times to make a par 63 18-hole golf course. This is a great way for learners of the game to test themselves, achieve a handicap and progress towards playing on a full-size course. In 2011 we started using the 6-hole layout on Friday afternoons to enable juniors to play a Stableford format for handicap.
Like all good Disney movies there’s plenty that will entertain the kids, but also something in it for the adults. The greens, for example, are small but are made to a full USGA (sand based) specification and should therefore be a joy to putt on for golfers of all abilities and in all weather.
80 yard 4th hole over corner of pond and the 12ft square Huxley Premier tees have been designed to enable a consistent ball strike without the mess that grass tees would become given the clubs used for short holes.
A round on the ‘Templar’ course takes less than an hour and is also great fun – whether you’re 8 or 80 years old, a scratch golfer or yet to get your first handicap.
Look out for our Annual open Par-3 Championships that started in 2009; five different age and ability categories to enable all of the family to get involved and a chance to play in a match-play final!
Driving Range
With the completion of the new driving range in 2007, our coaching programmes have developed further, including relationships with local schools and other groups looking to learn, or improve on, their game.
Honing and perfecting that swing is a never-ending exercise and sometimes there’s nothing more satisfying than knocking 100 balls into the country air. With free parking and no pre-booking required, golfers of any ability and any age are welcome to come along and use our Pay-and-Play driving range.
Visitors
Swanston welcomes visitors, whether it is individuals or groups. Our aim is to provide a first class golfing experience both on and off the course, at a competitive price. We continue to invest in our main assets – our courses.
We are in the process of procuring new greens equipment which will continue to improve and prepare the courses to the highest standards. Our aim is to provide all golfers with smooth-running greens, between 8.5 and 10 on the stimp meter over the season, so expect a fantastic challenge and a great day out when you play.
We would advise that you phone ahead of time (+44 (0)131 445 2239, option 1).

Inland, 18 Holes, Gents 5580 yards, SSS 67, Par 68, Ladies Par 70 , 5053 yards 9 hole short course (1028 yards) with USGA greens 350 yard driving range and 3 USGA practice greens FootGolf An exciting development has taken place at Swanston Farm, with the introduction of FootGolf.FootGolf is simply Football and Golf combined; a precision sport where players kick a football into a specially-sized golf green hole in as few shots as possible.
The game is played the same way as golf, except players use a football instead of a golf ball and the ball is kicked, instead of being struck with a golf club. Players kick their ball towards a 21 inch ‘cup’ in place of the usual golf hole. Pars are usually 5 or less and FootGolf is quicker to play, more accessible to players and does not require expensive equipment. The game is fully recognised by Sport England and the first FootGolf World Cup was held in 2012.
Swanston Farm is home to Edinburgh’s only FootGolf course and has been welcoming to its course players of all ages, stag parties, hen parties, sports clubs, children’s groups and birthday parties. It is also perfect for something a little bit different for corporate entertainment.
Come along to Swanston Farm and join in this fantastic sport; it’s relaxed, requires no previous experience whatsoever and will have you exercising and laughing the whole way round.
To book, simply call our Swanston Golf Pro Shop on 0131 445 2239 (press Option 1) and book your game over the phone. Alternatively, click here: http://www.ukfootgolf.com/edinburgh/4592157222
DiscGolf
One of the world’s fastest-growing sports, Disc Golf (combining the games of ‘Frisbee®’ and ‘Golf’) is now available at Swanston Farm.
Our course, named ‘Crooked Pine DGC’ is located within a mature woodland in the northern area of the farm, with ample free parking and just a short walk from our public Brasserie and sports bar. This fantastic sport is extremely sociable, suitable for all ages and abilities and can be played as single or group players. The game is played at a walk and players are required to throw their discs from the Tee to the Goal, in as few throws as possible. A round can be played as a short course of 9 or you can play a full 18 holes by playing the course twice. There is also a 6 hole mini course combined with the bigger course, with shorter fairways for younger children.
Disc Golf, with courses all over Scotland, including Glasgow, Dunbar, the Isle of Arran and Loch Lomond, is proving a huge hit, especially with schools, sports groups, corporate entertainment, stag and hen parties and children’s parties.
Swanston Farm’s course has been designed by the hugely successful ReBoot Disc Golf who has a great course in the BlueBell Woods at Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar, East Lothian.
The course is open 7 days a week from 9am until late (daylight permitting).
The course is 9 holes long, however players can play the course twice to play a full 18 holes for no extra charge.
