Under the Skye Bridge is the island of Eilean Ban, last home of Gavin Maxwell. Visit the Gavin Maxwell Longroom Museum, home to an exhibition on the remarkable Scotsman and celebrated writer, Gavin Maxwell. Most famous for his book ‘Ring of Bright Water’, explore the life of a complex man who through his writing was able to open the eyes of many to the wild beauty of the Highlands, and captivate still more with the stories of the life he shared with his otters.
The island also house Kyleakin lighthouse (now decommisioned) designed by the Stevensons. Climb to the top and admire the spectacular view then visit our lighthouse display in the Bothy. Learn how the lighthouse worked and about the life of a lighthousekeeper.
Eilean Ban and the surrounding seas are home to many animals and birds. Sightings of seals, cormorants, greylag geese, and divers are frequent and if you are lucky the otters. We also have a population of voles which can often be seen scooting across the paths. Less frequent visitors are pine martens, orcas and even sea eagles.
