The most common reason given for the golf course at Whalsay being categorised as special is that it is ‘The most northerly golf course in the UK’. However, it is also special for reasons known only by those who have played it. Set in a unique location and bordered by the sea on both sides, it is surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery, which in itself gives host to an abundance of wildlife. Seabirds, seals, otters and even the odd killer whale are common place. The public road ends at the clubhouse at Whalsay Golf Club, so as you set off in through your round, you slowly leave everything behind you and traffic pollution is not even a consideration. In fact on calm days, apart from the tranquil coastal sounds, you could easy hear a pin drop out on the course. Whalsay golf course is run and maintained on minimal part time staff, and the upkeep relies heavily on voluntary labour from its members, which is truly commendable.
The combination of the tranquil surroundings coupled with the treacherous golfing challenges make Whalsay Golf Course truly one of a kind.
