ArtWorks of the Earth, is a shop that offers all things inspired by the Orkney landscape. It is the teaching/studio/gallery of Jeanne Bouza Rose. Jeanne has been inspired by the landscape, history and community of Orkney since her first visit over 30 years ago. She paints with watercolours mainly using the 100 year old watercolour white-line print technique (AKA the Provincetown Print) and oils using large flat pieces of canvas and oil paint sticks.
The shop has numerous originals for sale as well as high quality digital copies (giclees), cards, mounted prints, mugs, postcards, and the occasional tote bag or notebook. She often has hand painted lampshades available as well. Private commissions are accepted for large original oil paintings. There is also a selection of work by other local artisans in fibre, pottery, knitting, and jewellery.
Jeanne offers short courses or workshops in the unique watercolour white-line printing technique. These workshops usually last about 3 hours and can easily be fitted into a holiday. They are offered only on Thursdays from May – September and can be arranged for October - April. No art experience is required as the process is straightforward. Each participant will complete at least one mounted print and take home the carved board with extra printing paper to keep on printing! Even tea and chocolates are included in the cost of the workshop! Because of some new twists that Jeanne has added, you will actually be creating an “Orkney Print.”
Jeanne and Graham Muir of Gramble Glass, have collaborated on fused glass pieces. These fired and fused designs are a combination of Jeanne’s designs and Graham’s glass skill. The standing or hanging glass pieces are unique in design. ArtWorks of the Earth has the largest and is the sole distributor of the collection in Orkney. Castaway Crafts in Dounby and The Loft Gallery also have some for sale.
Jeanne is the painter of a very large view of the island of Hoy. This 45.8 x 5.5 ft canvas panel was on display for the first time at the nearby Northlight Gallery in November 2015. It is a very engaging experience to see it hung in its entirety. She has various high quality giclee versions of it for sale.
ArtWorks of the Earth is a short walk along the main street in Stromness. Just after the Royal Hotel and opposite Sutherland’s the Chemist, you will find the newly relocated ArtWorks of the Earth at 59 Victoria Street, 01856 851 308. “Where chocolates and chat are free!”
