Vikings! Monsters! The Stone Age! Stravaig (Stra-Vague) (Verb) - Scots - To Wander You are invited to join us on our brand new 6 Day Orkney Stravaig, taking in the stunning East Coast, the awe-inspiring Orkney Islands and the majestic Highlands.

We explore the depths of Scottish culture and history from 4000 year old Pictish monuments to the heart of Viking Scotland, where Kings and Jarls fought for control of the lucrative North Atlantic trading routes, taking goods and settlers from across Europe to Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland and the Americas. We'll venture into the Great Glens, spend a night on the shores of Loch Ness and recant tales of the bloody Jacobite Rebellion, tales of clan massacres and experiencing the haunting beauty of Glencoe. 

Day 1

We set off on our epic adventure from Edinburgh over the Firth of Forth with stunning views of the UNESCO World Heritage site: Forth Rail Bridge as we head North. Our first taste of the Highlands comes at our stopoff in Pitlochry, We spend our first night in the amazing Sleeperzzz vintage converted train carriages in the remote Highland village of Rogart.

Day 2

Departing Rogart we wind our way up the East Coast, tracing one of the finest routes in the world, the NC500, exploring some of the most remote wildernesses in Scotland. We jump a ferry (included in your ticket price) across to the historic and majestic Orkney Islands, the seat of Viking power in the North, where Jarls and Kings vied for power over the hugely valuable sea routes.

Day 3

We spend the full day in the heart of Orkney, striking out to explore everything the magical island has to offer: Maes Howe & the Ring of Brodgar, Skara Brae & the Broch of Gurness – varying in age from the 4000 year old standing stones to the youthful 2000 year old broch.

Day 4

Day 4 starts once more on the beautiful Orkney Islands, heading South to explore one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Northern Scotland, the Tomb of the Eagles the 5000 year old cliff edge catacomb. We then head back to the mainland and skirt along the North Coast, exploring some of the most remote landscapes in the world, staying in the picturesque Durness, peering out over the North Atlantic, nothing but ocean between you and the Arctic.

Day 5

Day 5 takes us down the very West coast of Scotland with it’s astonishing scenery before diving back into the heart of the Highlands, winding our way through the Glens, the iconic symbol of Scotland’s wilderness, getting amongst the mountains and valleys to explore it first hand. We then go in search of Nessie, the legendary monster that lurks beneath the deep waters of Loch Ness. Our hostel for the night is situated right on the shores of the loch with stunning views across the water.

Day 6

We depart our Lochside hostel making our way south along Loch Ness, through winding roads and towering Munros. We stop in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom.

Following the Great Glen, a fault-line that splits the Highlands in two, we journey south towards the truly astonishing Glen Coe with its sad, bloody history. Through the most beautiful Rannoch Moor we head down to Braveheart country before arriving back in Auld Reekie.
