Scotland's Castle Trail Aberdeenshire covers 17 castles to be explored. More in Moray Tours and Transport has pre-designed a day tour itinerary to help you visit up to 3 (three) castles. Alternatively, you can tailor-make your day or multi-day castle

In Aberdeenshire's region, there are 263 castles. It is the region with the highest number of castles in Scotland and well-known as Scotland's Castle Country. A few castles remain unchanged since those days, whilst others have been modernized and re-designed.

Some of Scotland's castles date as far back as the 13th century. Ruins tell us tales of intense clan rivalries and invasions from near and far, each providing a little insight into Scottish life way back in the day.

All Scottish castles are unique and were built depending on wealth and status at the time. You might have seen some of these famous fortresses as a backdrop in famous films and the odd few are still used as family homes.

Below a suggestion for a 1-day itinerary:

Balmoral Castle (P)

Originally built in 1390, in the heart of Royal Deeside, Balmoral Castle has been the Scottish home of the Royal Family since it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852, having been first leased in 1848. Every generation since then has spent their summer sojourn in August, September, and part of October here.

Only the ballroom is open to the public, a magnificent space where the Ghillies Ball has taken place every year since Victoria’s reign. Admire the exquisite collection of artworks, china, and silver, as well as the occasional exhibition, before setting outdoors to explore the gorgeous gardens and waymarked walks through the estate.

Castle Fraser (NT)

Built in 1400, Castle Fraser was the home of the Fraser family for more than 400 years. This superb construction was built around a fortified tower house using the local granite and follows a Z-shape architecture, which was a popular style of Scottish castles built at the time.

The castle is filled with family portraits, ornaments, and mementos – all of which have their own colorful stories to tell about the lairds. The estate contains a flight pond, mixed woodland, and open farmland, with two waymarked walks giving magnificent views of the local hills. The historic walled garden features shrubs, flowers, wall-trained fruit, and vegetables.

The Castle appeared in some scenes in the 2006 film The Queen.

Craigevar Castle (NT)

Built in 1626 for the Forbes family, Craigievar Castle is one of Scotland's most iconic and best-loved castles. Craigievar was a family home until the 1960s, creating a quirky blend of modern comforts and rare antiquities within the ancient walls. The lack of artificial light beyond the ground floor makes a real sense of what it must have been like to live here all those years ago.

Due to the lack of artificial light, the impressive collection of artifacts and art, including Raeburn's, armor, and weapons is seen by only the shifting light from the sun, exactly as they would have been when they were made.

The riot of turrets, gargoyles, and high corbelling work create the fairy-tale appearance which is said to have inspired Walt Disney for Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

** Visitors usually prefer to spend more time at Balmoral Castle. Visits to other castles may be limited due to logistical planning. Contact us with your personal wishes/requirements.
