This is a fantastic, varied walk from Blair Atholl to Pitlochry, taking in lovely birch woods, a high moor, a great viewpoint, old homesteads and the Pass of Killiecrankie. The walk follows the banks of Loch Faskally back to Pitlochry.
After catching the train from Pitlochry to Blair Atholl, we walk through the village and cross the River Garry to pick up an old route that goes uphill through a lovely birch wood. The path then takes us up onto a fine moor with great views of the surrounding hills. We follow a faint path across the moor and then climb up Craig Fonvuick – a super viewpoint. The route then descends past some old homesteads and into the famous Pass of Killiecrankie. The autumn colours here are usually fantastic by mid-October. After admiring the Pass, we walk back to Pitlochry along the banks of Loch Faskally.
Although the walk starts in Blair Atholl, we’ll meet up at Pitlochry railway station at 10:00 to catch the 10:20 train to Blair Atholl. The walk will finish by 17:00 at the Pitlochry iCentre in Pitlochry. The walk is 16km long with a total ascent of 550m and should take about 6 hours. The walk follows mainly good paths and tracks, but with some wetter ground in places. The cost of the rail fare is approx. £5 per person.
You will need to bring with you a pair of good boots or trekking shoes, waterproofs, a small rucksack, some warm spare clothing, walking poles may also be useful, hand sanitiser, a face mask and something to eat and drink. Sorry, but no dogs.
