The Northern Borderlands Heritage Tour starts from Carlisle, the Great Border city and proceeds to Lanercost Priory, an Augustinian monastery built in the 12th Century, then onwards to Hadrian's Wall to visit the Old Roman Fort at Birdoswald. Afer this, one proceeds to Bewcastle where there is a fine example of an Anglo-Saxon Cross. Around mid-day one has a picnic lunch in Newcastleon which was once the heartland of the Border Reivers. Then the tour continues to Hermitage Castle and onwards to Abbotsford, home of Sir Walter Scott. You then board the Borders Railway train to Edinburgh where over-night accommodation is provided in a centrally situated hotel.
