Join Guiding Star Adventures on an eight day cycling expedition to the Outer Hebrides along the epic Hebridean Way! Scotland’s wild islands offer a unique wilderness experience. Rich in both wildlife and culture they offer the perfect platform for adventure as you disappear into the most remote area of Britain.
Outer Hebrides - cycle the wild islands!
The aim of the Outer Hebrides expedition is to take on an epic journey along the length of this wild archipelago. Your adventure will see you cycle the length of the Hebridean Way from the most southerly inhabited island, Vatersay to the most northern point of the Outer Hebrides, the Butt of Lewis.
Along the way you will be amazed by the wild, breathtakingly open, rugged landscape of the Uist’s, the towering mountains on the Isle of Harris and the desolate beaches on the Isle of Lewis. Although primarily a cycling expedition, the Outer Hebrides offers world class wildlife experiences as you move through these incredible islands. Additionally, the expedition offers endless opportunity to experience the local culture and cuisine in its original surroundings.
Having successfully cycled across these islands you will have been discovered a rarely explored wilderness. An action packed eight days will have seen you immersed in adventure in Britain’s final frontier.
At Guiding Star Adventures we are committed to delivering exciting expeditions with flexible itinerary’s rather than a guided tour. The information below is the basic framework around which our Outer Hebrides expedition is constructed. A more detailed itinerary is available on request or will be automatically sent to you once you have applied to join the expedition.
Team members arrive in Oban the evening of 9th August 2018 at the designated hostel (exact location will be confirmed in your detailed itinerary). On arrival you will be greeted by your expedition leader and shown to your accommodation for the night. Once all members of the team have arrived in Oban you will be given a brief by your expedition leader who will set out the overarching plan for the expedition and deliver key detail for the following day’s events.
Your adventure starts now! The morning after your arrival we are up and about. After a final kit check you will board the ferry to take you over to the Outer Hebrides, this crossing is a fantastic opportunity to spot a range of aquatic wildlife whilst getting to know your fellow team members. Once you arrive at the Isle of Barra you will begin your epic journey along the Hebridean Way, finishing that evening at Castlebay overlooking the coastline and the 11th century Kisimul Castle.
Over the next six days you will voyage across ten islands. You will leave Barra and enter the Uists; remote, wild and totally stunning. You will cycle through isolated villages and see how the ancient farming technique of crofting is still practised, whilst at no point being more than a few miles away from the striking coastline. The journey will see you once again cross the sea to the Isle of Harris and take on some of the highest mountains the Outer Hebrides has to offer. Once at top the magnificent views stretch for miles across the islands and over to mainland Scotland. As you begin to decent you will to treated to some of the best beaches the world has to offer, completely unspoilt and very much resembling how they would have looked for thousands of years.
Along the way you will stay in some truly unique accommodation that ranges from grass covered cabins to traditional Hebridean black houses. All of which are in exciting locations offering every opportunity to experience the wildlife and culture these islands have to offer.
The final day of the Hebridean Way will see you finish at the most northerly point of the Outer Hebrides, the Butt of Lewis. Here the lighthouse and the wild coastline offer a fitting location for what has been a truly unique and wild adventure.
Elated to have completed the epic Hebridean Way and, after having had the chance to take in the moment, you will be driven to Stornoway, move into your accommodation for the night and be given the opportunity to celebrate your success. The following morning you will board the ferry to Ullapool and be driven back to Oban where the expedition official ends.
