Our guided tours are perfect for history connoisseurs. If you want to explore Edinburgh's incredible past and discover some of its fascinating historical characters - without a focus on ghost stories and costumed guides - this is for you!
Historic Edinburgh Tours are a company which absolutely loves our city and its history. Our aim is to offer you interesting historical walking tours which show off some of the best bits of historic Edinburgh. We’re not a ghost tour company...we think traditional historical tours are just as interesting.
We offer two walking tours within the Edinburgh UNESCO World Heritage Site. One tour takes you around the Old Town of Edinburgh and the other guides you around the fascinating Greyfriars Kirkyard.
Greyfriars Kirkyard Tour - The 'Resurrectionists Tour'
Thursday nights 7pm to 9pm approx
Adults £10, Concessions £8
Learn about the notorious 'bodysnatchers' of Old Edinburgh and become a 'Resurrectionist' in your own way with this tour. We don't dig up the bodies of the people we look at on this tour...but we do bring them back to life through well researched and well told stories. Learn about Covenanters, murdered officials, Greyfriars Bobby and learn to 'read' the tombs in Greyfriars.
Why would you want to come to Edinburgh and take a tour of a graveyard? Well this is one of the World's most interesting burial grounds AND one of the most atmospheric. Don't think that a graveyard visit just looks at the story of the burial ground and the tombs within it, this tour is an exploration of some of the most famous (and infamous) people in Edinburgh's history.
It's a story of the people of Old Edinburgh...and you're mere inches from where their bodies lie today.
Tour in English. Walking difficulty - easy.
Old Town of Edinburgh Tour - The 'Walking in the Footsteps Tour'
Friday nights 7pm to 9pm approx
Adults £10, Concessions £8
We take you to the very places where history happened...and help you imagine Old Edinburgh as it once was. Take this historic Edinburgh walking tour and you get two cities for the price of one - the city you see today...and the Old Town, the one we bring to life for you!
Follow in the footsteps of Kings and Queens, robbers and rogues. From Burke and Hare to Mary, Queen of Scots, this tour takes you right to the Old Edinburgh places these famous people knew. We explain how locations have changed...and often how parts have stayed the same. We take you to where people were executed, where freshly killed corpses were exchanged for cash and even to the sight of what is almost certainly Scotland's most famous murder!
King James IV, Deacon Brodie, Burke and Hare, King James VI, Mary Queen of Scots, Robert Burns and Bonnie Prince Charlie all feature on this well researched and well delivered history tour.
Tour in English. Walking difficulty - moderate with a couple of steep slopes.
Children under 16 go free but the content is of an adult nature due to descriptions of Edinburgh's gory past. The attendance of children is therefore the responsibility of their parent/guardian.
In the winter months (October-March) we use a hand-held projector to shine relevant images onto walls which help us explain our stories. In the summer we use an A3, sometimes A4, booklet with images.
All our tours are available only in English. Your guides are both Scottish and were born in Edinburgh and have lived their all their lives.
