Modern life is now everywhere in Scotland and technology has found its way through many remote areas. Nevertheless, many traces or museums are still here to remember and teach us how life was until the Clearances and after.

We are proposing a visit to the Newtonmore Highland Folk Museum where you can get a flavour of how Highland people lived and worked from the 1700s up until the 1960s. Over 30 historical buildings are displayed and furnished to their time period. Some buildings have been built from scratch on site and some have been moved here from other locations. There is a 1700s township (featuring 6 houses) at one end through to a 1930s working croft at the other.

Take a step back in time on the west coast at the Skye Museum of Island Life and at Arnol on Lewis where you will see preserved thatched houses and blackhouses.

Next stop is the Strathnaver Museum in Bettyhill. It is located in the ancient province of Strathnaver, scene of some of the most brutal acts of the Highland Clearances, it is unsurprising that this is the main story told by the museum.

Not far from Bettyhill lies a deserted township: the Rosal Settlement, one of the largest of the 50 or so pre-Clearance townships of Strathnaver. Today, only the foundations of the building are visible but it is nevertheless very impressive.

We also offer more specific tours as a Jacobite trail or a Viking trail.
