Crossing the Clyde on a ferry to the Isle of Bute provides a day full of variety from the extravaganza of a Gothic mansion to the Celtic monastic ruins of St Blanes. Walks, a pub lunch and a stroll along the sands make this a fulfilling day.

Day's Itinerary:
- Drive to the ferry at Wemyss Bay & enjoy a scenic crossing to this jewel of an island in the Firth of Clyde, viewing sea birds en route and possible porpoise.
- Visit the outstanding Gothic marvel of Mount Stuart (perhaps Scotland’s best kept secret mansion). 2 options here:
- EITHER go around the house interior an extra cost £5 house adult; child: £6.75; Concession: £9.50
- OR walk its gardens and tree fringed sea shore. Grading; easy and flat along paths to the arboretum, gardens, coast and woodlands. Distance: 3km Height: level walk
- Picnic lunch - please bring your own.
- Afternoon hike to Scotland’s finest monastic site from the era of the Celtic saints of 6th century. It still exudes a deep peace in its remote, upland setting. Grading: Easy climb to the monastic ruins. Distance: 1km. Height Gained: 50m.
Possibility of making it a longer walk by going down the glen and up over the hill to Glencallum Bay. Grading: Moderate to strenuous over some boggy and stony ground. Distance: 6kms. Height gained: 200m including the walk up to St Blanes.
- Drive up the west coast to Ettrick Bay and paddle its fine sandy shore, or if you’re brave, swim!
- Home again on the ferry.
