Our self-drive tour to Orkney & Shetland will feel like you’re taking a journey back in time. Along the way you can learn about early Scottish history and archaeology and the Nordic influence on these stunning and remote islands.

You’ll visit the Scottish east coast and places such as St Andrews and Aberdeen, but the main goal of the journey is, of course, the two archipelagos of Shetland and Orkney. Located between the Atlantic and the North Sea, both Shetland and Orkney have their very own place in Scottish history and have been influenced by Scandinavian countries over the centuries. Today this influence is still evident in relation to local traditions, place names and, not least, the language.

The two archipelagos are also considered to be a bit of an epicenter for archaeology with fascinating archaeological sites dotted around the islands. You’ll have the opportunity to explore former megalithic monuments such as stone circles and settlements. In addition, there are also quite a few active excavations where you can have a chat with the local experts during the summer months.
