‘Paddle Anthrax (Gruinard) Island’

Located in Gruinard Bay is Gruinard Island, commonly know as Anthrax Island.  Only 2 kilometres long by 1 kilometre wide it lies less than 1km offshore. The island gained its grizzly title as a testing site for the anthrax bacterium during the WW2.

For many years, it was judged too hazardous and expensive to decontaminate the island sufficiently to allow public access, and Gruinard Island was quarantined indefinitely. in 1986 a determined effort was made to decontaminate the island and in 1990 the island was pronounced safe by the removing the warning signs.

We intended to explore the coastline and circumnavigate the island, stopping off to explore the arches and rock formations as well as explore a little by foot.

Below is a video of a recent trip to Anthrax Island.
