‘Paddle Longa Island’

“Longa” meaning Ship Island in old Norse, is only 0.49 sq miles in size. Its highest point, Druim am Eilean, is just 70 metres above sea level. Although this is a small island it is a very familiar landmark ling just off the coast from Big Sands and the Big Sands Campsite.

The island was last inhabited by a small fishing community in the early 19th century but has not been lived on since those times. The land on the island consists mainly of a rocky and sparse sandstone base covered with grass and heather. There is a range of birds which nest on the island including Great Skua which we would hope to see on our journey.

We intended to explore the coastline around Longa and circumnavigate the island, stopping off on one of the beaches to explore a little by foot.

Here is a blog form someone we previously took on this journey. Been a Longa Time Coming.
