Few have heard of it, let alone been. Our destination is the remote islands of Shetland in the far north of Scotland. Celebrate the Summer Solstice, visit amazing ancient sites, and learn about the islands’ history, myths and legends.

DAY 1: Edinburgh to Aberdeen

We depart Edinburgh and make our first stop at the iconic Forth Bridge before travelling onwards through the Kingdom of Fife, taking in the beautiful coastal scenery and stopping at the charming university town of St Andrews. We journey north to Dunnottar Castle, which is dramatically perched over the North Sea, before boarding the ferry in Aberdeen for our overnight sailing to the Shetland Islands. (Overnight: Ferry)

DAY 2: Lerwick

We arrive in Shetland, and spend the morning exploring the main town of Lerwick – followed by a visit to the impressive Iron Age Clickimin Broch. Wander through Scalloway Castle and enjoy award-winning fish and chips for lunch. Discover the wild cliffs of Eshaness, before returning to our base in Lerwick. Spend the night soaking up the atmosphere in the local pubs.(Overnight: Lerwick)

DAY 3: Lerwick

After a leisurely start we journey west to explore the wee islands of Burra and Tronda, before visiting the famous beach at St Ninian’s Isle. Next, we wander through Jarlshof; one of Scotland’s finest and best-preserved prehistoric sites before heading back to the hotel to freshen up and have dinner. We finish the day at the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse; an iconic location with sweeping cliffs and stunning sea views. Exclusively ours for the evening, enjoy a guided tour, traditional music and sample some of Shetland’s local specialities. Spending the summer solstice in such a far-flung location, surrounded by the vast North Sea and its wildlife, is an experience which will last a lifetime.(Overnight: Lerwick)

DAY 4: Lerwick

Spend the day exploring the charming town of Lerwick. Immerse yourself in the rich and interesting history of the islands at the award-winning Shetland Museum. You will also have the chance to visit the home of Detective Perez in the BBC Shetland programme, and the museum dedicated to the world-renowned Viking fire festival that is Up Helly Aa. (Overnight: Lerwick)

Day 5: Lerwick and ferry to Aberdeen

After breakfast, we venture north to discover the ancient Tingwall, once home to Shetland’s earliest parliament. Soak up the last of the island scenery at the beautiful Lunna Bay. We head back to Lerwick for lunch before boarding the overnight ferry back to mainland Scotland. (Overnight: Ferry)

DAY 6: Aberdeen to Edinburgh

Back on the mainland, we make our way through scenic Royal Deeside, passing Crathie Kirk; the Royal Family’s place of worship when at their Highland residence. We visit the Braemar Highland Games Centre, housed in the stunning Duke of Rothesay Highland Games Centre. The new centre offers a fascinating exhibition exploring the history of the annual Highland Games in Braemar. Our final drive takes us through the Cairngorms National Park before arriving back into Edinburgh.
