The Small Isles of Rum, Canna, Eigg and Muck in the Inner Hebrides are some of Scotland's hidden jewels. This cruise from Mallaig will allow you to set foot on these quiet and remote islands while enjoying dolphins, eagles, otters, seals & more!
September 20th to September 24th 2021About
Skye and the Small Isles are the destinations for this brilliant 4-night cruise from Mallaig on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
Rum, Eigg, Canna and Muck - names that bring a twinkle to the eye of those who have visited the Small Isles, and perhaps a smile to those who have not yet had the pleasure. These close neighbours located to the south of the Isle of Skye are all quite individual in their own ways, making them perfect for our short cruise of 4 nights to experience them all.
Join us on board MV Monadhliath, our specially converted deep sea fishing vessel, that sports two custom-built raised observation platforms with seating. These give you a great vantage point from where our experienced guides will point out the wonderful Scottish wildlife we come across on our journey. This could well include both golden and white-tailed eagles, otters, seals, puffins, whales and dolphins. We just never know what might appear!
We will have the opportunity to go ashore each day to stretch our legs and explore these remote locations (dependent of course on the sea and weather conditions being suitable). Make sure you bring your camera and charge those batteries.
Our crew will cook and serve you breakfast, lunch and dinner in our comfortable saloon lounge while we talk about our sightings and maybe share some favourite photos from the day over a drink.Highlights
A welcome aboard MV Monadhliath and settle in before departing for our first night in the dramatic Loch Scavaig with the Black Cuillins as a backdrop. There will be time to go ashore to Loch Coruisk, an old crater and reputedly home to a mythical 'kelpie' or water horse, where we will admire the stunning mountain scenery. We will keep an eye out for otters patrolling the shore and visit the common seal colony.
In the morning we sail to the island of Canna, the westernmost of the Small Isles archipelago. This very green and verdant island is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland (NTS). Canna, along with its neighbour Sanday, is home to seabird colonies including puffins, golden and white-tailed eagles, breeding waders and otters. There is also a rich diversity of flora and the island also boasts a number of scheduled ancient monuments, plus sites of historical and archaeological importance.
A morning sail will take us to the mystical Island of Rum and the opportunity of whale and dolphin sightings along the way. There will be a chance to visit Kinloch castle or walk along the shore. We will watch out for both eagle species and red-throated divers and will have great chances to see the island's population of red deer. Our anchorage for the night will be in Loch Scresort in front of Kinloch castle.
We will head for Muck in the morning, taking in some of Rum’s magnificent coastline. After a short walk on Muck to get a flavour of this little island before lunch, we will then head onwards to the final small isle on our journey of Eigg. The Isle of Eigg is a diverse island with coastal land, unimproved farmland, willow and hazel scrub, native woodland, raised bog and moorland. With a rich variety of flora and fauna the highlight will be the chance to walk up the striking An Sgurr of Eigg and is well worth a visit. Our final night will be at anchor at Eigg.
A brief last look at Eigg in the morning and then we will take in the mountain and seascapes of the Western Highlands on our way back to Malliag, arriving back in harbour about 1200.Route
