A circular tour from Dumfries taking in the wilderness of the Highlands famed for it's Dark Skies and open landscape. The tour then heads to the coast for a more refined ride of pastoral landscapes, abbeys, hidden beaches and quaint holiday villages.
The tour begins and ends in Dumfries. You head into rolling farmland first, with the Galloway Highlands ahead. The 12 Apostles Stone circle, mainland Scotland's largest, is just a short distance into your ride. Did you know that the bicycle was invented here? Well, you can visit the grave and workshop of Macmillan the inventor near Thornhill at days end.
You visit Morton Castle and Drumlanrig Castle in the morning of your second day, which is quite a contrast. Moniaive, quaint, full of creatives and with a great cafe. The ride to New Galloway is remote, with big skies, views and history.
At Lauriston you ride the most scenic road in Galloway with your first glimpse of the sea and coast. Gatehouse of Fleet is quiet, possibly even genteel and absolutely charming. You can end the ride in one of the great cafes.
Many think that the ride along the coast to Kirkcudbright is the finest in Galloway. There are many secluded beaches to stop at, so pack a picnic! This is the heart of smuggling and pirate country with many of the fine houses built on the proceeds. There is always something creative happening in Kirkcudbright. Galleries, craft shops and more than enough to spend a second day here.
We weave you along quiet roads taking in Dundrennan Abbey and views across to the Lake District. A night in Kippford should always include a walk to the shell beaches. This is our answer to Cornwall.
A final days ride to Dumfries to close the loop. It includes a visit to Sweetheart Abbey and more stunning bays and beaches. The ride totals 143 miles, but can be made shorter or longer to suit you.
