Westraak Tours are run by Andy and Karen Penn, we are a locally based couple who love Westray and enjoy showing the island off to visitors. Karen was born and bred in Westray while Andy is a trained archaeologist who moved here more recently.
Our tour begins when we collect our guests in our minibus, either from the ferry or plane if its a day visit or from the relevant accommodation here in Westray. We use our family home in Pierowall as a base for the tours where we provide refreshments and a home cooked lunch.
We aim to make our tours as relaxed and informal as possible but we try and fit in as much as possible to a day without exhausting anyone! There is some walking involved but we are never far from the bus and we are happy to accommodate all ages and abilities.
During the day we will visit the airfield where visitors can witness the world's shortest scheduled flight, and we take in some spectacular coastal scenery at the North End of the island. Archaeological and historical sites are abundant but the key sites are Noltland Castle (an impressive 16th century fortress), Quoygrew (an excavated Viking settlement site), The Links of Noltland (prehistoric coastal settlement site in the process of being excavated), Ladykirk (medieval church) and Gill Pier.
A highlight of the tour is a trip up to the lighthouse at Noup Head, an RSPB bird reserve set in a spectacular cliff top location. The cliffs are alive with many thousands of seabirds as well as seals and occasionally whales and dolphins.
The Heritage Centre in Pierowall is home to the Westray Wife, a unique neolithic carved figure, as well as displays of local history and culture.
During the day we will tell you lots of local tales and enlighten you about life in Westray, the Queen of the Isles.
We look forward to welcoming you to Westray soon.
