On the east coast of the Island of Hoy, Orkney is the village of Lyness.
During WW2, the fleet base at Lyness (known as HMS Proserpine) was the main accounting base for all officers who were carrying out duties on the islands of Flotta, Hoy and South Ronadlsay. During this time the village was home to more than 20,000 armed forces.
Today, the Scapa Flow Visitor Centre & Museum interprets the history of Lyness and the Scapa Flow and its importance during the war. There are also Commonwealth War Graves containing graves from both world wars.
