This part of the Cairngorms National Park is signficantly quieter than its nearby neighbour of Deeside and is an area of great scenic beauty and magnificent wildlife which is popular with walkers. It also houses a good number of fascinating craft businesses and the evocative and extensive ruins of 16th century Glenbuchat Castle.
Although Strathdon is normally very quiet, it comes to life for the annual Lonach Gathering with its famous March of the Lonach Highlanders, which is held on the fourth Saturday in August. The Gathering is billed as 'Scotland's friendliest Highland Games'. Lonach Hall also hosts regular programmes of traditional music and dancing where everyone is encouraged to join in.
