Whitehall is located on the Grice Ness peninsula between Mill Bay and Papa Sound on the Orkney island of Stronsay.....
Looking out across the Papa Sound, Whitehall is the main village on the island of Stronsay. This pretty village took its name from a house built here in the 17th century by the privateer Patrick Fea. During the Herring boom of the late 19th and early 20th century this was the most important fishing port in Orkney.
Visitors can explore this illustrious past at the Fish Mart Heritage Centre, one of the town’s main attractions. In the heritage centre exhibits tell the story of Whitehall’s once booming herring industry. The building also features an excellent café and hostel. Whitehall is the terminal for the roll-on, roll-off ferry service.
