Take the 21st century Pentland Firth crossing to Orkney with Pentland Ferries. The crossing takes approximately one hour between Gills Bay near John o’Groats to St Margaret’s Hope during which you will sail through the Pentland Firth and into the Orkney Archipelago.
This is the shortest and quickest sea route to Orkney with your car with a timetable that fits in with most of the outer island ferries. St Margaret’s Hope is a 20-minute drive from mainland Orkney, largest settlement on South Ronaldsay.
Citylink also runs a bus service from Inverness to Gills Bay which coincides with most ferry crossings. From St Margaret Hope, visitors can take the X1 stagecoach bus to Kirkwall or Stromness.
MV Pentalina is a purposely commissioned vessel for the route capable of carrying 9 articulated lorries, more than 30 cars and 250 passengers (346 in peak season).
